As you may know, the AAA cancelled its annual meeting this year and will instead convene a 10-day November Fall Events virtual series called Raising Our Voices; the Call for Participation went out recently. You can submit proposals for a variety of Live-Streamed and View-on-Demand events, none of which will be traditional panels. More information on these options can be found in the CFP. Submissions are due by 3PM EDT on August 25, 2020.
This is an experiment for all of us, the AAA included, and as you think about your participation and potential submission, it’s worth keeping a few things in mind. First, virtual events make it possible to bring together a diverse set of interlocutors, including international scholars and practitioners, and others for whom conference travel is financially prohibitive, so you may want to think expansively about whom you want to engage with. Second, virtual events can foster creativity in the form your events and presentations take, so feel free to experiment.
Third, because there will be far fewer Live-Streamed sessions than the annual in-person meeting, and therefore a much lower acceptance rate for submissions, it will be vital to collaborate with other section members (and across sections) as you plan. You can use our section’s AAA Communities platform to discuss ideas for Live-Streamed events.
Lastly, you do not have to register or be a member of the AAA at the time of submission, and if your submission is accepted, registration rates will be significantly discounted for this virtual Fall series.
If you have any questions that cannot be answered on the AAA’s event series website, feel free to contact APLA’s Program Committee Chair, Andrew Gilbert, at andrew.gilbert@pm.me.
