As concerned anthropologists and social scientists, we join scholars and scholarly associations around the world1 in voicing our dismay at the increasing threats to freedom of expression that target scholarship critical of the violence in Gaza. In a discipline complicit in long histories of exploitation, we must work to critique and dismantle imperialism and racism in all its forms, including antisemitism, islamophobia and anti-Palestinian racism. This is the case even when the content of our scholarship, and the positions we take as scholars and private persons, conflict with national norms, institutional commitments or even dominant trends in anthropology. We must urgently safeguard and support scholarship undertaken in the service of justice and peace, as war and violence escalate worldwide, and after the International Court of Justice has found a plausible case that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.

The recent dismissal of fellow anthropologist Ghassan Hage by the Max Planck Society throws into relief key issues regarding the role of scholarship and the responsibility of institutions of knowledge. Following an article in Welt am Sonntag that made unfounded allegations of antisemitism against Professor Hage, the Max Planck Society chose to terminate his contract. The brief statement issued by the Max Planck Society explaining their rationale for dismissing him profoundly mischaracterizes his scholarship, his critical writings, and his public statements on Israel/Palestine. Without any evidence, the MPS accuses Professor Hage of “Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, discrimination, hatred, and agitation,” and writes that publicly disseminated statements by scholars “undermine the credibility of science” and damage “the reputation and trust in the institutions that uphold it.”

The MPS statement also mischaracterizes what constitutes important and credible scholarship in the social sciences. Broader social impacts and augmenting the public good are key tenets of successful research, and public engagement is a responsibility that anthropology has long taken seriously. As scholars of social relations and cultural phenomena, it is in fact our responsibility to take critical positions. And institutions of knowledge must support and protect scholars who offer critique–particularly those who do so informed by their empirical research within, and personal experiences of being part of, historically subjugated communities.

This is one among an increasing number of cases that highlight the vulnerability of institutions of knowledge to suppression and smear campaigns, and in particular the weaponization of false allegations of antisemitism. Such cases include (but are not limited to) the recent treatment of Claudine Gay in the United States; Masha Gessen and Achille Mbembe in Germany; and David Millar in the UK. Given that well-established scholars are susceptible to such vicious attacks on their personal integrity and professional stability, we must be doubly fearful for the effects on precarious and early-career scholars, particularly from under-represented groups.

We join others in calling on the Max Planck Society to retract its statement, offer a formal apology to Professor Hage, and reinstate his position at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology.
