At the 2018 AAA meetings, APLA will be offering two Early Career Mentoring events; these events are free and open to all conference attendees.
- Publishing Your First Book (Saturday 8:00-9:45am; Location: Fairmont, Fairfield):
Publishing the first book monograph is often essential for junior scholars working towards tenure. In this panel we bring together three author/editor pairs (Chicago, Cornell, Stanford Press) who will speak concretely about how their first books came into production. This panel will provide guidance on the nuts and bolts of going from proposal to bookshelf.
To attend please RSVP by November 9 to Joowon Park (park@skidmore.edu)
- The First Three Years: What I Wish I Knew When I Started the Tenure Track (Saturday 4:15-6:00pm; Location: Fairmont, Hillsborough):
Join panelists as they reflect on critical issues for succeeding and surviving on the tenure track. How does one set the pace for publication, react to the unanticipated, and reach a rhythm with teaching? What strategies help new faculty keep up with new publications? Is work-life balance attainable or is it a myth? Can and should untenured faculty really say “no” to service requests? Panel members represent a range of institutional types, state universities, liberal arts colleges, and private research-intensive settings.
To attend please RSVP by November 9 to John Osburg (john.osburg@rochester.edu)
